67th anniversary of the shooting of 103 Italian Officers Memorial

October 6, 2010

Address by Col. John Peter Liuzzi

Ladies and Gentlemen.
Dear Friends, you all my warmest greetings.
An Italian lady, who usually spends the holiday island Kos, wrote a letter to leading Italian newspaper in which he expressed regret and astonishment to astonishment oblivion which had covered a massacre of Italian soldiers overseas to keep up the prestige and honor of our country.
a historical, tragic, which is among those buried for decades in the so-called "cabinet of shame". In it were stored files on so many tragic events of the 2nd World War because they were hidden and forgotten, and among these, was unworthy of burial, the story of the shooting by the Germans of 103 officers of the 10th Regiment "Queen", 84 of which not attain the 29 years of age.
That letter struck me and moved. For this emotion I visited military newspaper libraries and archives in Italy and Great Britain; I met people who told me the facts that have profoundly marked and I had the privilege of listening to family members of those heroes evoke dramatic episodes of violence, war and human tragedy. All this prompted me to keep a collection of notes which, rearranged, was published.
My desire to know each other as well as, day by day, I was discovering led me to request the intervention of the greatest Italian institutions to recover consciousness collective forgotten this episode.
In recent years I have met many people who have always wanted me to have their friendship and their support. And from this growing and surprising network of human relationships has led to a petition sent to the President for you to commemorate the fallen of Kos, researchers are still 37 bodies buried, we would include in the route memory with Kos El Alamein and Cephalonia.
On the occasion of 70th anniversary of our country held a solemn commemoration in Kefalonia, Corfu and Kos to remember the massacres that were committed against the Italian military.
Today However, if we can not represent all of Italy, 4000 we are bringing the love of Italians who have signed the petition to the President of the Republic, support for the National Association of Former Internees, Survivors of the National Veterans and Families Memorial of the Acqui Division, Lasallian Alumni Association of Rhodes and the Institute of Autonomous Military Strength of Italians Abroad and respectful participation of the 9th Infantry Regiment, which collects the tradition and heritage of the 10th regiment Regina "
The presence of representatives of institutions and the Italian Armed Forces, the practices undertaken in these hours from the Commissioner General for Research of Honour Fallen bodies is a first generation, if not due, that redeems the honor of those military officers and gives meaning to those values \u200b\u200btoday as obsolete Duty, Pride, Linearity, Loyalty, Faith and courage .
efforts and steps taken with the help of Italian and Greek friends have enabled us to be here today to commemorate the sacrifice of men who would not bend
October 11, 1992, inauguration This Monumental Tombstone, Ernesto Benzi, vice president of Veterans of the Aegean, said: "....... we just pray and hope that touches the conscience of remorse those responsible are still alive and push their children and grandchildren, perhaps not unaware dell'insania to bow their heads and ask the Lord what we can not grant ".
Today our people, Italian and German, so as well as the greek people, belong to the European Union itself, united by a spirit of peace, cooperation, solidarity, committed to addressing problems of survival in the economy and forced to defend against threats of terrorism. And that is why, at a distance of 67 years, we can look forward with equanimity to overcome the barriers of hatred for what the war entailed.
I am deeply grateful to the President of the Province of Latina, with such sensitivity, it offered the "Bell of Remembrance" to the Fallen of Kos.
thank, on behalf of all the Italian friends, the mayor of Kos, Mr. Kiritsis, and his administration for agreeing that the bell was brought here on the island and installed in front of the Monument Tombstone.
The contribution of Ms. Franzini Nocera, who financed the transportation of the bell from Italy in Kos, it was an act of love that we all appreciate.
The gratitude of all of us go to Mr. Kostas Kourounis that in the name of his father, it was involved in logistics, the general architect and Androulakis Sideris for their organizational assistance.
A word of esteem to their compatriots who came to the island this time and an affectionate greeting to those who could not undertake this journey.
In general Taricone deserve our appreciation for wanting the participation of a representative of the Army.
I personally expressed my feelings to the mayor of Andria, Giorgino lawyer, he had arranged for the participation of a group of teachers and pupils in schools in his city to honor two of his fellow citizens: the lieutenants and D'Amore Lorusso.
A warm thank you to all young students are our future. "Do not Forget." "History is teacher of life. Democracy, which allows us to be free, we owe to the many young people who base their life and Honor to the Flag."
And all you people, civilians and soldiers and by your presence give a meaning to the friendship that binds our people.

There will be no national anthems or fanfare.
Those 103 men died in silence.
For 67 years have remained in the darkest oblivion.
want you to listen in silence our voice and our prayer
