Commemoration of the 103 Italian officers murdered by the Germans in Kos in 1943

On 6 October, for the first time 67 years from the historical facts will be held in Kos, the commemoration of 103 officers killed by the Germans in the aftermath of the events following the armistice of 8 September 1943.

A commemoration that began as a completion of a body of opinion which involved free citizens and institutions, Italian and Greek at the highest levels. After a long and painful silence, in fact, family members and friends of those officers have decided to send a petition to the President of the Italian Republic, which raised a few weeks more than 4000 signatures and the support of major veterans groups, cultures and histories.

The Italian government on September 16 responded to the petition and the parliamentary question by Senator Joseph Caforio (IDV) in starting the process to search for the bodies of 37 soldiers still missing, officially commemorate this slaughter and enter Kos, Kefalonia and El Alamein, a journey of historical memory.

the island of Kos, among the largest of the Dodecanese, was the scene of one of the many war crimes committed against German Army of the Italian soldiers who, having faith in the oath provided, refused to join the Republic of Salò.

The island is strategically important for the control of the theater of operations in the Balkans through the local airport, was manned by two battalions of the 10th Infantry Regiment "Queen" and artillery units supported by British troops arrived in 1500 days following the September 8, 1943.

The island was attacked Oct. 3, 1943 and the overwhelming German forces supported by air strikes violent, after 36 hours of fighting, they forced the defenders to surrender. About 3000 of the 4000 Italian soldiers were captured and stored in the castle of KOS without compliance with the provisions of the Convention Geneva, the British military was given the status of captured prisoners of war. Of the 148 Italian officers: 7 passed with the Germans, 28 managed to flee to Turkey, 10 were hospitalized and then moved to Germany, 103 were shot. The bodies of 66 officers, 42 of which are recognized, 8 were found in mass graves. The bodies of 37 others since then have never been searched for possible sites, although you know the shootings.
